原文: I was truly amazed by the temples in Egypt. I don't think any other country preserved history as ancient as Egypt. A sunset sailing in the Nile near Luxor also felt so serene. Sharm El-Sheikh near the red sea is also so far our favourite snorkeling site. Cairo was a lot more chaotic but some neighborhood was also quite nice. I felt it was a very authentic experience of a Islamic country.

Although people indeed were always trying to sell you sth at an unfair price, sometimes took advantage of you, and we always had to bargain for everything we actually want. Despite bad behavior on the surface, Egyptian people were among the kindest people I've met deep inside. People approached us with genuine curiosity and good intentions. We chat with a random teenager using translation app at a local restaurant. Taxi drivers called my parents in China about the phone I dropped in his car and drove across the entire city to give it back. Lots of great memories about the people there. And you just need to be super affirmative and impolite for the aggressive selling to quickly shut them off.

There were indeed some annoying moments. The Egyptian embassy wrongly gave me student visa despite I applied for tourism visa ( I had no idea in advance since the visa only has Arabic). I had to wait a while entering Egypt and got questioned for long returning to US. This was really frustrating but I feel I should not discount my trip experience towards the country for the incompetence of some bureaucrat.

And although Egypt was quite chaotic, I never felt unsafe. It gave me the impression of possibly high frequency of petty crimes but very little violence. It felt a lot safer in that dimension than US and even some parts of Europe.

原文: Well like I explained to a different comment. I felt Korea does not offer lots of unique sights for a Chinese person, for both history and nature. Korea was quite developed, nice and clean but not really “adventurous” or “refreshing” for me. I did like the food scene so I still put it as “good”

At least back in 2012 Philippines was a lot less developed. In remote areas they didn’t even have any modern hotels. Often times there were flies on the food in restaurants. So it was really not a very pleasant experience.

And I really did not like Manila. There were slums in parts of the city. Traffic was horrible. I got my phone picked by a kid on the street. Many parts of the city also did not feel very safe. We were always charged a high foreigner price and people got angry when we tried to negotiate it down. We got dropped off to a wrong destination once after a failed negotiation which made us quite nervous.

Despite that, I think the country actually offers a lot to see. We hired a Bangka in Taal lake to reach the island inside the big lake, which then has a crater lake on the island and another island in the lake. That feels very special. Snorkeling with a whale shark and watching the fireflies in Donsol was very unique experience. Mayon volcano was also quite a scene from Legazpi with a perfect cone shape. Boracay has one of the best beaches in the world.

It was also fascinating to see how transportation is very different in Philippines. In Manila you have to take buses across the city, then transfer to Jeepneys to reach small districts, and finally tricycles (often shared) to reach neighborhood. It is not efficient but a very unique three tier system that I’ve never seen. There are lots of small airports for remote areas(and even for Manila) which operates more like a bus station. There are also big outrigger ferry boat and motorcycle taxis. And I see old modified Jeeps that were occupied by a big family of 10 also people. Although not generally an advanced system, transportation in Philippines was unique, innovative and inspiring.

Culturally Philippines is also quite different from the surrounding countries. It somewhat felt like a Latin America country in Asia. Very unique culture.

We also met a huge diversity of people during the trip, local motorcycle taxis driver that showed me around Donsol, Japanese diver, hostel roommates from Europe who were a bit snobbish, old American with young Filipino escorts, elderly Chinese in his 80s that strike a conversation with me who have not got a chance to see any people from China for decades. It was such a variety of people I met on that trip.

I was still quite young back then. I’ve only been to UK for school outside of China and I was much less experienced for planning a trip. I was quite unprepared and Philippines was not an easy destination. So it was truly an adventure. None of my later trips gave me that level of adventure.

And we couch surfed in Manila for that trip. The host was very nice, had some very inspiring chat. He showed us around and treated us with homemade Lechon. It is still the most delicious pork barbecue I’ve ever had and I usually hate pork. I guess the couch surfing also made it more unique and memorable. Sadly it was all replaced by Airbnb business these days
