I originally hoped to draw a line under the matter, but since a handful of viewers have asked for further context, I’m absolutely willing to elaborate.I produced this video because:1) I believe the creator’s original upload gave a misleading impression of Japan, including the very neighbourhood of Tokyo that I’ve lived in for several years. When I visited the exact spot from her thumbnail, I found to my genuine surprise that much of the graffiti had in fact been photoshopped. 2) I firmly believe a few bin bags in Shinjuku and a few spray-painted walls in Nakameguro are not a reflection of “what’s happening to Japan" and it is my right as a content creator in Japan, who lives in the cited neighbourhood to critique these views.3) I worry low-effort, sensationalist content is saturating the internet particularly about Japan, which does not reflect the reality of the country. The barrier to producing this sort of content and monetising it has never been lower.4) I do not have a personal problem with the creator, but I believe they have a history of producing low-effort sensationalist content that crosses serious ethical boundaries. One concerning example is a video called “The Japan Tourists Don’t See: Exploring Tokyo’s SECRET Slum” in which she walks into one of Tokyo’s most economically deprived areas, films vulnerable homeless individuals, and shows their faces unblurred to half a million viewers. As someone who has visited this district many times, I can say this slum isn’t a “secret”. It’s a seriously heartbreaking neighborhood where many elderly residents struggle with severe mental health issues. In fact, mental health issues are why many of these individuals are homeless in the first place. These are people who live outdoors in sleeping bags and under cardboard boxes.And at their lowest point, they absolutely should not have to worry about a stranger walking up to them, filming their face and sharing it unblurred to hundreds of thousands of people.- They deserve better. They are not "content". They are human beings. And every single Japanese person that I've spoken with was shocked to the point of disbelief, that this sort of content exists online in any way shape or form.Worst still, the production of this style of Youtube content may lead other content creators to re-produce similar style videos, given there is no effort required, other than to switch on a camera, switch off your morals, and film people living in an economically deprived neighbourhood. In the original cut of the Abroad in Japan video “What is Happening to Japan”, this section critiqued this creator's homeless video in more detail.It also referenced another upload from this creator called “How Do Japanese Kids React to Foreigners?” in which the creator repeatedly films children in public (for example, while riding a train) and shows their unblurred faces to 11 million viewers, while taking sponsorship money for a language app. When Japanese parents send their child to school, they shouldn’t have to worry that a stranger is going to film them and broadcast their face online to millions of people. Most content creators in Japan know this is a serious red line. (This video still remains up on her channel).(And for clarity: in Japan, if you plan to feature children on camera, you need explicit permission from the parents. When we filmed at a farm in Nagano for Connor’s stream last year with Ludwig, the venue informed us a school group would be present in advance, and conversations with the school and parents took place to approve them being on camera.)- In the end, that section of my video was greatly reduced because it felt tangential to the wider point about misrepresenting Japan. Ultimately, perhaps I should have left it in, as it would have elaborated even further on why I think this creator’s content has a history of being problematic.But I hope it’s uncontroversial to say that filming vulnerable homeless individuals and broadcasting them to large audiences is deeply inappropriate. - Japan is a country, not a safari park. These are real people who deserve basic respect.In this video, I included a short montage of clips and screenshots from the creator’s homeless video. And at no point did I claim she was “making fun” of the homeless. - My narration clearly states:“A few years ago, a friend showed me a clip of a video in which the same person walked through an economically deprived part of Tokyo filming homeless people under the guise of showing the real Japan.”That is the entirety of my point. That the act of broadcasting the most vulnerable people in society - people who have nothing and are often suffering from severe mental health issues - is completely unacceptable.The montage was exactly that: a montage of clips, photos, and audio from what I consider to be a genuinely sad video. Watching the source material speaks for itself, regardless of the montage in this video. By all means watch it. Like me, you'll likely come away wondering both why it was made and feeling a little less faith in humanity.After this video was published, one edit to that montage was made, removing a couple of seconds of audio to avoid any potential confusion about chronology. This did not alter any argument or claim. And the idea that this creator's homeless video was edited in this video and presented to make her look bad is utterly preposterous, as her original source content is already deeply, morally wrong. It should never have happened at all. If her fans/Youtuber friends believe that filming society’s most vulnerable people is acceptable content or photoshopping stop signs with graffiti is ok to create a reality that doesn't exist, then we will likely disagree on a great many things. My only potential regret is that I didn’t leave the extended cut in covering the homeless video/filming children in public.- But I’m weary that it may have been picked up by Japanese media leading to even greater backlash against foreign content creators in Japan in general. - I really don’t want to contribute towards that narrative, as most folks here are doing good things, even if it may have helped support my argument against this creator’s past content.But I hope this elaboration provides clarity to the viewers who’ve been confused by the recent wave of videos criticising me personally and this video. I stand by this video entirely from start to finish.That being said, it's honestly been a dark and depressing chapter and I’m keen to get back to more positive, uplifting subjects.
