I think that reading misses what Lee’s character was actually supposed to represent. Lee isn’t meant to be a “training is optimal” example, he’s the extreme end of perseverance. His training is excessive on purpose. The story literally shows the cost of it. He pushes himself so far that his body breaks after the Gaara fight. That’s not the narrative saying Guy’s method is perfect, it’s showing the price of chasing that ideal. And honestly, comparing his training to Naruto’s doesn’t really work because they’re solving different problems. Naruto is learning techniques. Lee’s entire existence in the shinobi world depends on pushing pure taijutsu as far as it can possibly go. Lee isn’t written as the “correct” way to train. He’s written as the embodiment of effort taken to its absolute extreme. That’s why his fight with Gaara hits so hard.

I dont agree with your argumentation. I dont want to talk about Lee being the main character, that has other narrative implications but your criticism of him is just not sensible. Obviously Lees training wasnt bad, he was probably top 3 in the Chuunin exams being unlucky to be paired up against Gaara of all people. The world of Naruto does not function the same way as our world does, Lee and Guy do the exact same training and Guy managed to become the greates taijutsu user in history through it, being the only one to give a (for Madara) satisfyin fight to Madara. Lee did not become crippled because of bad training but because Guy had too much hope in him and didnt stop the fight against Gaare who clearly outmatched everyone in the Chuunin preliminaries

That fight really hit hard for me. It is the triumph of the spirit over the body. Lee is forced to push his boundaries to the extreme just to reach the same level as the others. That is the only way he knows how to pursue a purpose. Gaara, on the other hand, was the wall he was destined to confront. I think Kishimoto did a great job. Lee believed that pursuing goals had to be that extreme because it was the only way life had taught him to succeed. However, life also showed him that there is a limit to everything. Losing that fight while still standing was pure poetry.

Lee is hard work, with both fails and successes and the most shonen, when you think of the genre, and the least focused character. As in, focused on a goal. He wants to be a splendid ninja. Gets that, but then instead of fighting smartly, he goes beyond to show off and fails because the other guy thinks a little bit. He is talented, but concentrates on talent vs hard work. He fails at understanding his opponents and having a real goal beyond showing off. In the forest, Lee gets defeated because the sound ninja abuse his moment of weakness caused by him showing off to Sakura. Gaara defeats him when he shows off and instead of finding weaknesses, he just becomes stronger and faster. He never understood Gaara. That was the point.

If the show was indeed about hard work vs talent then Lee would be a better MC, but it's not. Anyways as it stands Lee is still the best representation of handicapped people in anime.

Naruto is special because of who he is as a person and not the access to power he eventually has, which he unlocks Kurama's chakra by understanding Kurama and overcoming that hatred. Lee would never convince Tsunade to become Hokage or Zabuza and Haku they're more than tools for others to abuse, Lee doesn't do anything for the themes of bonds and connections or convince Gaara that he's far more than a weapon to be abused and he's not a monster. Naruto changes the world by showing sympathy for those he's at odds with and showing there's a different path, and not because he can do more push-ups than them or throw a bigger beam.

Lee would be terrible protagonist. Anyone with common sense should know that. But I don't expect common sense from people today. Especially from big fandoms. Lee was far more impressive. Not pushing him for the main character. But Naruto always had an upper edge with the nine tails chakra. Naruto came close to losing 'most' of his battles until he would bring out the nine tails. Lee trained for himself. And pushed far more than Naruto ever did. I found his story to be far more inspirational. He stood on his own, with his own power, and truly believed in himself.

Naruto fans miss the point that Lee pushing himself was entirely a bad thing, at least the lengths he went or the way he and Guy went about it. Not only Lee's philosophy doesn't exactly internalize to other characters how he thinks. He doesn't exactly inspire others to do what he's doing, infact quite the opposite. No one thinks of Lee as someone to overcome or doing absured shit to further their own goals since overcoming talent has nothing to do with their philosophy.

Calling guy negligent or irresponsible is intentionally ignorant of lees circumstances and worse of all the shit Naruto gets into. The exponentially large list of risks and dangers he is constantly exposed to. The best are always taking risks and pushing boundaries. Guy and Lee are cursed. They have no or limited talent for anything else. If you look at any Olympic weight lifter professionals from the outside. Everything they do is reckless and irresponsible.
