In the country I live in, Australia, the Federal Government has allowed a total of 1,000,000 legal immigrants to enter the country in the last 2 years. This has had a large amount of negative impacts onto ordinary citizens, that include, severe housing stress, exploding rents, environmental degradation, choked infrastructure and most incredibly, an unaffordable level in cost of living. But, the real reason is why? It's part of neoliberalism that is espoused by progressive governments around the world. One of the three pillars of neoliberalism is open borders. The upshot of open borders, from a neoliberal perspective is to a) artificially inflate GDP by importing more units of consumption (i.e. people buying stuff) and hence appear to have in place a thriving economy. A country's economic health should be measured by " GDP per Capita", which shows how much of the economic pie is being received by a country's citizens. In Australia, it's decreased, significantly over the last 2 years. Citizens are struggling and doing it tough. And b), it increases the labour pool and suppresses wage growth. Australian wages have not increased in inflation adjusted terms in the last 12 years. People can't keep up with costs!!Who benefits - the Elites. Who suffers? The ordinary person in the street. And all this "woke" stuff is a smoke-screen to divert attention to what really is happening. Citizens and immigrants alike are both being sacrificed at the altar of Neoliberalism, perpetrated over the last 40 years by Progressive governments, who are controlled by Global Corporations; the real owners of the Country. And the upshot is the hollowing out of the working and middle class, who then are left wondering what the hell is really going on. Riots are an outcome of people suddenly waking up to this reality and saying "hey, I didn't buy into this!!"Violent protests are wrong. Protests against those that are victims of the neoliberal agenda is wrong. The answer in my mind is a sustainable level of immigration that benefits all, without eroding costs of life. Unfortunately, I don't believe governments accept this thesis and will not change. We all know what the outcome will be.
