That's very strange. Every hotel, everywhere has checkout times, this isn't some "crazy foreigner" thing. What made her specifically not want to leave in this situation?

Not sure where this learned behavior comes from. Hotels in the US are very patient but even they take action against this stuff.

Seriously. Was she ill? Did xpedia fuck up her reservation and the hotel wasn't cooperating? Or was she a nutter? Sadly, these days I'm not willing to take the news' side in articles like this anymore. So much rage bait out there.

There are even some English teachers who come here for the first week in a hotel from a western country. And, then they realize that there are only Japanese outside of the room, that they are surrounded by unfamiliar faces, and then begin to have panic attacks, and meltdowns. Some of them even had to get their family members to fly out to get them out of the hotel room, and then fly back to their country together after that criza. It hits even harder if you arent familiar with the language, nor customs.

Probably thought she had the right to go into any place she wanted, cause a bunch of shit and not take any responsibility for it. Where have I seen that before...

Sounds like mental illness. I wish her well. People holed up in hotel rooms have done far worse things.

I work at a minshuuku here and this year it seems like everyone has forgotten the definition of ‘check out’. The amount of times I’ve had the keys handed back and gone up to the room and someone’s sat on the bed this year has been wild. Or they hand back the key and say ‘I’m checking out, but we’re still upstairs packing if that’s okay’ like ??? no it’s not???

As a hotel manager here, guests who checked out late would upset our schedules. We hire outside professional cleaning companies. Check out is 10:00. The cleaning company would show up at 9:30. Usually, at least 2 or 3 rooms had checked out already so they could start. If one room stayed late, they would end up waiting around annoyed. I would allow 30 minutes late check out only, but that was it. Then I would knock and ask them to please check out. If they didn’t, the cleaning company would knock and tell them that they had to clean the room. They would always leave by that time. I can’t imagine somebody refusing to leave and needing to get the police involved. She must have been nasty to the employees.

There's a couple things this could be, but it could just be a cultural difference in how overstaying at hotels typically works in the US. If you stay past checkout they usually just charge a late checkout fee until you stay past a certain time and then they just add another night to your stay at the rack or market rate, whichever is higher. Typically a hotel is happy to add that extra night once or twice since sometimes people run into emergencies or unexpected issues and it helps keep the occupancy rate and room rate up so both sides win. No one would ever get arrested for doing that in America, the worst that would happen is security would ask them to pack their bag and leave, or pack their bag for them and escort them out. You'd have to violently resist for some sort of criminal offense to have occurred.

I just had to pay 4000 yen for two hours extra. The person that made 10am standard is a douche, and the market that accepted this is insane.

usually hotels around the world checks out at 12 noon andlate checkout is usually at 2 or even 4pm as some hotels. in japan, checkout time is 10am lol or 10 30 and 12noon is considered late checkout

She needs a lawyer to offer the hotel some money so that they will tell the police to drop the charges. Then she will be set free without charges and going to court. If they press charges, she may be stuck in a detention center until her court case comes due which could be months from now. In Japan, you NEVER want the police involved. It’s expensive plus you can lose a minimum of 23 days of your life locked up with zero access to a telephone.

At the same time, as Johnny Somali demonstrated a few months ago, if you're sufficiently shameless you can "tough it out", play dumb when you *do* end up in court, and get off relatively lightly if you're OK with being permanently banned from the country.

Why is this news? I don’t mean why is it in the subreddit (that’s fine with me - thank you for posting), I mean, why is it news in the media anywhere? Because it’s a testament to how peaceful Japan that little shit like this makes the news
