Man I feel like these types of gritty, boots-on-the-ground type of firefights are so rare in anime. There’s usually some magic or power involved. And there’s not much emphasis on tactics and movement. But here they incorporated all that and not to mention it’s a brutal fight as well. We only just met the Russian artillery guy I think but he was a beast. That was a really great battle to watch and it’s not even done yet

The only other anime that does this well that I have seen is Kingdom.

Great usage of subtle revisionist history in fiction

Manga authors are famous for writing what they know. Most of them don't actually the order of a battle or the setting lets them just do whatever. Its been shown time and time again the author here is a fan of the era and would do a disservice to the setting if they got it wrong.

God, Tsurumi basking in the shower of blood and then getting slapped in the face with the severed hand was such excellent dark comedy. He really might be my all time favorite anime villain through the combination of being highly competent and manipulative, having a great tragic backstory, and just his constant goofy theatrics.

From rain of gold to rain of blood. Pretty much within expectation, but still quite a stark contrast an episode makes. Tsurumi with this line "If your daddy loves you then he won't drop his shells on you!" hits hard. He's fully in his element now and only the sweet release of death can stop him atp.

This area can be difficult to understand without some knowledge of Japanese history, so I will briefly explain. (Detailed explanation of Boshin War, Hijikata, and the Republic of Ezo setup in the story). In the current storyline, Hijikata Toshizo is essentially re-fighting the Battle of Goryokaku after 40 years. He finally achieves revenge by sinking a warship using the main cannon of the Kaitenmaru, a vessel that had run aground during the Hakodate War.

By the way, in the Meiji government, people from the Satsuma Domain and the Chōshū Domain, who had led the new government forces in the Boshin War, almost monopolized important positions... Tsurumi, who comes from a prestigious samurai family of the Nagaoka Domain that fought on the former shogunate’s side in this war, is treated poorly in the military.

Thanks for the clarification - I just finished the manga and I was confused about some things. I am still a bit confused about Hijikata's goal. Is he fighting for the reestablishment of the Ezo Republic or the independence of the Ainu?

I remember a similar comment like back in season 2 how the author did a fantastic job of finding actual historical people that fit the narrative.

Wait, are we talking about the battle of goryokaku? I am not in the know with these things. So we're gonna get to see the battle of goryokaku? EDIT: I just found episode 60 on Crunchyroll. I thought it was over and was very sad to think I wasn't going to be able to see this battle. I'm extremely excited

Koito senior choosing to sink with his ship and watching him get swallowed up by the tide... A man of the sea first, and a father second, till the very end. 🫡 (I think Otonoshin knows that his papa loves him regardless) "Bushido" is definitely going to be Hijikata fulfilling his promise (to repay his debt), but will also more than likely be his swan song which just feels so bittersweet for one of, if not the most patriotic man in the entire series.

We have known that Hijikata has loyalty to the Ainu, but now we start to see why. It was Kimuspu who saved his life. The connection Wilk and Hijikata shared in Abashiri prison now makes more sense. One thing is clear: his loyalty to the Ainu shouldn't be questioned.

Kirawus is a character that hasn't received as much focus as even Ariko. That shot of him looking back at the deed, you couldn't tell he couldn't be happier. No doubt he will do everything he can so that the deed is safe.

Thinking back on it, Kirawus has been part of this adventure for quite some time already. This alone speaks of his devotion to the Ainu’s cause. But those eyes! He must’ve seen a bright future in this deeds book.

Kudos to Koitos dad, but man I am sad to see him go, he was a cool character

The captain went down with his ship(s). From the looks of it, he even tied himself to the helm. I suppose that he either didn’t want to get separated from his ship by the water current or leave himself no opening to escape.

Even though Heiji is on Tsurumi's side, the way he chose to go down with his ship stirred up some emotions in me. From my knowledge, this practice is an ancient maritime tradition where ship captains uphold their responsibility... considering that this is Meiji Japan, this would extend to upholding not just responsibility, but also honor as Heiji might regard his ship as one with him.

At first, I thought that Kadokura's tattoo was just Wilk's trolling or was a redundant tattoo, but it actually was the location of the remaining gold that only Hijikata would know.

Sugimoto still wearing the standard soldier uniform looks like a friendly fire nightmare to be honest.

Damn, these Russians ain’t playing around. Dudes brought some serious firepower. Not as serious as Hijikata’s hidden heavy gun. Bro just had that dusty old thing tucked away in the fort this whole time huh? lol. They’re still outgunned, but that antique obliterated Tsurumi’s naval support.

The battle between the fleet and Kadokura's group was so fucking hype, the music made it feel so epic.

They really amped up the level of gore with today’s episode. Like damn! It was a pretty gruesome sight to see all these Russian revolutionaries get ripped apart into clouds of red mist and severed body parts. Tsurumi’s trenchgun did some nasty damage too. And Koito sliced someone’s face in half…!

Also on the naval side, all 4 ships are real and were part of the Ikazuchi class of destroyers. The one we see go down, Ikazuchi was actually scrapped in 1913 after a boiler explosion. Inazuma sank after a collision off the coast of Hakodate in 1909. The other 2 ships were sold off for scrap in 1921.

I'm glad Kadokura's side were able to find the cannon to take down the ships, Mansur is amazing being able to accurately hit the four warships, the way they were celebrating was so funny. I want to think Kirawus and Mansur are okay, but this arc is definitely going to have a lot of deaths... Kadokura always finds a way to survive though lol.

Perfectly satisfying episode but I have no idea how they’re going to wrap this up in 2 episodes, lol. People were spreading completely unsubstantiated rumors about a movie which was kind of annoying... I still maintain, Tsurumi and Wilk playing a cat-and-mouse game in the wilderness could’ve been its own full-fledged episode.

Rushing the rest of the material in 2 episodes isn't remotely feasible without completely butchering it.

They are leaving the final portion of the final arc to be a movie-length special or a movie. Though if I had to guess, I think it will be like AoT where it will air on TV first.

I bet is that the final episode is gonna be double-length
