I have been to Yakushima. We saw monkeys riding on the backs of deer. We hiked to Jomon Sugi. We enjoyed the local onsen afterwards. It is truly a magical place but not necessarily everyone’s cup of tea. If you like quiet places, don’t care for big city life, you may do well here. I recommend a few nights to allow the spirt of the land to soak in slowly. Rushing is counter productive.

Around 10 years ago, I did a road trip through the nuclear bombing sites in Hiroshima and Nagasaki ultimately ending in Yakushima. I was reminded of the violence of man and the recovery of nature. Yakushima is magical; take a tour and you'll learn of it's extremely unique ecosystem. I've been around the world, but I never thought that this trip would be the most memorable of all.

Love the storytelling in this video! Princess Mononoke has been my favorite movie growing up as a kid and last year I got the chance to visit yakushima and see this place for my self and it was truly one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to in my entire life. I think it is one of the most underated locations in Japan, but I hope it doesn't become a over crowded tourist location since its such an sacred place.

It is very rare to find someone using the original Japanese language clips and even rarer for someone to be able to match the tone of every clip used despite not using any of the actual score, I am thoroughly impressed.

I think Nausicaa, a very similar story, is more dark than Mononoke, but both Nausicaa and Mononoke are my two favorite movies of his.

Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite and most profound films capturing the spirit of nature and the effects of our disconnected relationship from it. You've just helped further bridge the gap of that film into reality for me. This message to protect our ecosystems is probably the most important of our day and age so thank you for the work you put into spreading it!

To call the forest that inspired an anime the most sacred place in Japan is wild. Japan is a country with a very rich religious and cultural history that tie together, that forest isn't even in the top ten of sacred places.

'Least prepared for this hike' oooh no I think my friends and I can claim that title. We booked a guide for the jomon sugi trail, thinking it would be a chill 6 hour hike - until the hostel staff told us to get up at 4am the next day and to bring basically pro gear we didn't have. Awesome video!!

The American Pacific Northwest is also a temperate rainforest. Similar biome. Go there any you'll find similar if not greener, mossier forests. I've been to places in Oregon that make Mononoke Hime look like a documentary.

If you are in Europe and want a similar place I recommend the island of Madeira. It is said that when the Portuguese first settled it they lived on tiny islands off the coast and went every day to cultivate the land because they were frightened of the spirits. Then later they set fire to the forest and it burned for years.

The sad thing about such videos is, it comes with a cost of over tourism of these places...
