Coming from a very messy culture, I find a bit hilarious how uptight japanese people are

In my country, as long as I pay, it doesn't matter. I can eat an ice cream inside, and when I exit the store, I pay, then it's OK.

Pretty common in America tbh. I know someone who worked at Walmart and would routinely scan empty drink bottles.

Most places in the UK do frown on it, but a lot of parents will open a snack or fruit for their kid while going round the shop and pay for it at the end.

I've grabbed a cold soda from the check out line at the grocery store, drank it while shopping, and then paid for it at check out. They don't care as long as you pay for it.

Our definition of theft includes dishonest intent, so whatever social norms you might be flouting you're never coming anywhere close to that bar. It's funny to me that the comments are calling it not just rude but criminal as if the guy isn't very obviously intending to pay.

It's a social faux pas, like opening up a drink before paying for it, but I'd cut the guy some slack if that's how it's generally done in Thailand.

It's for sure how it's done in Thailand, in 7-11's too so I can totally understand why they thought it would be the same.

its not possible to know every little rule/customs/traditions before you visit the country.. you learn from mistake. i even learnt today that its bad pulling the lid before paying.

Seems like they are overreacting. But as a foreigner you should always respect local customs.

This is the internet making a big deal out of nothing. Not saying that putting hot water in your noodle before paying for it is right, because that's 100% wrong in Japan, but the cashier isn't angry, she IS cutting him slack, and these tourists have just made an honest mistake.

I don't hate living in Japan and Japanese are nice, but they really need to grow some balls to communicate better. Just educate the thai man about the rules here instead of taking everything in and hating behind the keyboard.

i'd like to stress that japanese Xitter users represent the pissiest kinda japanese people though haha, normal people have enough self-awareness to see that publicly scolding a tourist for such a minor faux pas makes the poster look like much more of an antisocial ass than the tourist.

No. However, if the customer is a foreigner, it can be understood as a cultural difference. If the customer is Korean, it wouldn't be surprising if they were sworn at.

Until paid for, it belongs to the shop.

In theory, everything in the supermarket belongs to the supermarket until you've paid for it. In practice, it's tolerated, and I'm not aware of it ever having caused any real problems.
